CLAYTON, N.C. — Dozens of people gathered in Clayton to support a boy mauled by dogs three years ago.

Ryder’s Race 5K started Saturday morning to raise money for the Ryder Wells Benefit Fund.

Ryder Wells was almost 2 years old when he was seriously injured by Rottweiler dogs in November 2015.

His injuries included a punctured lung, a broken arm, a broken jaw and the loss of the left side of his face. He’s undergone multiple surgeries.

“It’s a great turnout,” his mother, Brittany Wells, said in a Facebook video before the race began Saturday.

Runners and walkers cheered as Ryder and his family approached in a golf cart before starting the 3.1-mile course.
