Roxboro man arrested in woman's stabbing death

A Roxboro man wanted for the murder of a woman surrendered himself to police on Tuesday .

ROXBORO, N.C. — Roxboro police on Tuesday arrested a man who is believed to have stabbed and killed a woman in her home on Monday.

Sherrod Stewart, 35, of 659 Hester Store Road, Roxboro, was charged with first-degree murder after he called 911 to surrender, according to a news release from the police department. Authorities found Stewart on Main Circle near Southern Middle School Road.

Roxboro police responded to 110 Sandstone Way at about 10:40 a.m. on Monday and found Nolla Bently, 32, dead. Police said she had been stabbed several times.

An arrest warrant was later issued for Stewart, charging him with first-degree murder in Bently's death. Investigators don't yet know the motive for the stabbing.

During the investigation, Southern Middle School and South Elementary School were placed on lockdown as a precaution, but authorities said all students are safe.
