RALEIGH, N.C. — Bazooka the cat weighed 35 pounds when he arrived at the SPCA of Wake County.

His owner had died after suffering from dementia. The SPCA said it’s likely he would forget if he fed Bazooka and would fill his empty bowl more than needed.

Now, the ginger giant has been adopted by a distance runner.

Robin Anderson, of Cary, lost 125 pounds and now runs marathons.

She had a Maine Coon who died in August and was looking to adopt another. She joined a Facebook rescue group, and “all of a sudden, last week there was a posting for Bazooka,” she said.

“I jumped in a car and came down to the Wake County SPCA and filled out the adoption papers,” she said.

“I related to the cat. I had a lot of weight-loss issues myself,” she added. “I said, ‘You know what? We could do well together.’”

Her previous cat weighed 18 pounds. Maine Coons are the largest breed of domesticated cats.

“I’m used to a big cat, but I knew 35 [pounds] is going to need some extra care,” Anderson said.

Bazooka went home with Anderson on Tuesday. He’s now named King Augustus.
