— Locals will tell you - Rocky Mount has transformed in the last decade. New jobs, new developments and new businesses are just some of the promising changes.

Now the city has another accomplishment: It's ranking as one of the best cities for working from home.

Working from home felt like a novelty a little more than a year ago. Now, it seems many Americans just have to take a few steps to get from their bed to their office.

But some cities are better for working from home than others.

InMyArea.Com ranked Rocky Mount as the best city in North Carolina to work from home.

Nationally, it ranked number 7 in the medium sized cities category for working remotely.

"I think it really comes down to having that lower cost of living, and having facilities in place to be able to allow people to work from home," said Mayor Sandy Roberson.

In My Area based the rankings on the percentage of residents with access to high speed internet and affordable broadband plans, as well as rent and housing costs.

New developments also make the city more appealing.

Completed 3 years ago, Rocky Mount Mills is home to apartments, homes, offices, restaurants and breweries. All of this is available on an 82 acre campus.

"This is a place I can live, this is a place I can work," said Evan Covington Chavez, Development Manager for RMM.

She said the combination of restaurants, breweries, homes and idyllic surroundings make it an ideal place to work from home.

"You can choose to work from your dining room table, or you can set up outside next to the river. You can choose to go over and get a beer and enjoy the beer garden," she said.

The idea is if you are working from home, you should be happy and comfortable doing so.

Rocky Mount Mills is owned by WRAL's parent company, Capitol Broadcasting Company.

Other nearby cities ranked as the best in their states for working remotely included Hilton Head Island in South Carolina and Woodbridge in Virginia.
