ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A member of the technology staff at a Rocky Mount school has been charged with sex acts with a student.

Rocky Mount police said Cameron Burgess, 22, was arrested and charged with a statutory sex offense and sex acts with a student on Wednesday after an investigation launched last week. Burgess worked at Rocky Mount Preparatory School.

According to police, the Rocky Mount Prep School Resource Officer received a complaint about Burgess being involved with a female juvenile student.

A school spokesman said there is no indication that any other students were impacted by Burgess' alleged behavior.

In a message sent home to parents on Thursday, Rocky Mount Prep school administrators said Burgess was only employed at the school for a month and a half before his arrest, and that the school has a process in place to keep predators out of the classroom.

School administrators said counselors would be on campus in the coming days to offer support to students who need it during this time.

Burgess received a $50,000 secured bond and is currently being held at the Nash County jail.

WRAL News has learned this isn't the first time a faculty member at the school has faced similar charges.

In 2017, former math teacher Erin McAuliffe was charged with three counts of sex acts with a minor. All three of the victims were students at Rocky Mount Prep.

Rocky Mount Prep school administrators declined an interview with WRAL.
