ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — The mother of a 2-month-old infant has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of the child a week after the baby's father was also charged with first-degree murder.

Keyona Mercer, 32, of Rocky Mount was arrested Tuesday and charged with first-degree murder and felony obstruction.

On Aug. 14, the baby's 23-year-old father, Kahlid Mohammed Whitehead, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of his son.

On Sunday, Aug. 12, officers responded to a home at 444 Sled Court at about 6 a.m.

At the home, they found the infant, who was unresponsive.

The infant was pronounced dead on the scene and was taken to the medical examiner’s officer for an autopsy.

The medical examiner's office said the child’s death was not due to natural causes and that the injuries were consistent with abusive head trauma.

Whitehead was taken to the Nash County Detention Center, and Mercer was transported to the Nash County Jail. Both were being held without bond.
