PEMBROKE, N.C. — A Rocky Mount man who had been missing for several days off the coast of Costa Rica was found dead Friday, officials said.

Deon Greene, who graduated from Northern Nash High School in 2012 and is a junior at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, didn't resurface Monday after going into the Pacific Ocean off Quepos, Costa Rica, officials said..

Greene had been studying Spanish at The National University of Costa Rica, located outside the capital city of San Jose.

The Red Cross and the Coast Guard searched for Greene for several days, and the Coast Guard pulled his body from the water about 7 miles offshore.

UNC-Pembroke Chancellor Robin Cummings went to Rocky Mount to meet with Greene's family, and counselors were available on campus to help students and faculty, the school said.

A prayer vigil for Greene is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Fellowship of Praise Church, at 3201 Benvenue Road in Rocky Mount.
