ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A Rocky Mount man is charged with assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a firearm in the city limits.

Edward Lee West, 64, was arrested in the 600 block of Arrington Avenue on Tuesday evening by officers responding to reports of a fight in the street where shots were fired.

When the first officer arrived, a witness stated that West had a gun and fired it prior to the officer's arrival.

Police said West raised the gun toward the officer, who then took cover.

Authorities said West then backed inside a fenced area. He was taken into custody when other officers arrived and surrounded the house.

No injuries were reported.

West was being held under a $3,000 bond in the Nash County jail.
