ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Rocky Mount police arrested a man Saturday they say broke into the home of a woman he was dating, assaulted her and then kidnapped her when she tried to escape.

John Blackston Jr., 41, was charged with kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, breaking and entering, driving while impaired and driving while license revoked.

Police said Blackston had gone on a date with the victim that night. When she returned home, police said, Blackston was inside the house and attempted to assault her. The victim tried to call 911 and then escape in her car, but Blackston got in and took control of the wheel, police said.

Authorities spotted the car on the 700 block of Nashville Road in Rocky Mount, where they said Blackston was trying to put the victim in the trunk. He fled on foot when he saw the responding officers. He was arrested a short time later.

The victim was taken to Nash General Hospital for treatment of her injuries.

Blackston was being held in the Nash County jail on a $40,000 bond.
