RALEIGH, N.C. — New digital technology — including e-sports teams and robotic simulators — are coming to some area school systems.

The North Carolina State Board of Education on Thursday approved new, one-time Digital Learning Initiative grants for 18 school systems in North Carolina, totaling about $750,000. All schools systems were eligible to apply.

Those include:

  • $50,000 to Granville County Schools wants for mobile podcasting studios that students, school employees and the community could use
  • $50,000 to Vance County Schools for a simulator that would allow students to program robots, such as virtual drones,
  • $45,900 to Edgecombe County Schools for more computer labs for e-sports and advanced computer science work
  • $49,250 to Johnston County Schools to start e-sports teams at all 14 middle schools

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction selected the winning projects from dozens of applications across the state.

The Digital Learning Initiative grant has been around since 2017.

The grant focuses on helping school systems acquire and teach new technologies. According to the department, the initiative is to support “the development and dissemination of local innovative digital teaching and learning across North Carolina.”
