Posted — UpdatedA post on Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson’s personal Facebook page appears to make light of and cast doubt on details surrounding the attack last week on the husband of U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
“I’m sorry Paul I don’t believe you or the press!!!!” the post, published Saturday, says. The message was posted along with an image of packaging mocked up to look like a Halloween costume for an “attacker.” The image features a picture of a shirtless, grinning, hammer-wielding man wearing underwear.
The suspect demanded to know the whereabouts of the Democratic House speaker as he confronted Paul Pelosi, police told AP. The suspect was ultimately arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, among other charges, the news service reported.
A spokesman for Robinson didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment or elaboration on the post.
Several Republican leaders, including North Carolina U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis, have acknowledged and decried the incident.
“The attack on Paul Pelosi is beyond disgusting and reprehensible,” a post on Tillis' Twitter page said Friday. “Praying for his complete recovery and I'm glad law enforcement has arrested the perpetrator. Violence never has a place in our political system, we air our differences with debate and settle them at the ballot box.”
