PEMBROKE, N.C. — A Robeson County man opened fire on deputies Wednesday and later engaged in a 90-minute standoff before surrendering, authorities said.

Deputies went to the Pembroke home of Martin Elliott Brooks to serve warrants for weapons charges and a probation and parole violation. As they spoke with a woman in the home, Brooks started shooting at them, authorities said.

The deputies and the woman escaped unharmed.

Brooks then barricaded himself inside, while Robeson County Sheriff's Office SWAT Team members gathered outside. Authorities negotiated with Brooks and finally persuaded him to surrender.

Brooks, 37, of 601 Albert Road, was charged with four counts of assault with a firearm on law enforcement officers and one count each of discharging a weapon within an enclosure to incite fear and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was being held without bond in the Robeson County jail.
