SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Two men who held up a convenience store wounded the owner Tuesday after he ran outside to see how they were getting away, police said.

The robbery happened at the 3G Mart at 320 Stancil St. about 11:30 a.m., officers said.

Two men came into the store with a shotgun, demanded money and fled with an undisclosed amount, police said.

After handing over the cash, the owner, whose name police did not disclose, went outside to see if he could get a description of the getaway vehicle. The robbers shot him in the leg before fleeing in a gold Toyota, police said.

Police said they were looking for two black men, but the thieves wore ski masks, and no other description was available.
