ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — Halifax County District Attorney has cleared Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Bobby Martin of any wrongdoing in a December shooting.

Martin will return to work next Monday, City Manager Joseph Scherer said.

The chief was working with officers to serve outstanding warrants on Dec. 20 when he shot and wounded Darrius Carter on Hinton Street.

Martin has been off the job while the State Bureau of Investigation reviewed the shooting

"I look forward to working with Chief Martin to improve the efforts and results of our police department through his professional competence and leadership ability," Scherer said in a statement, thanking the captains who helped oversee the department in Martin's absence.
