A Roanoke Rapids man has been charged with sexually assaulting a 2-year-old, authorities said Monday.

<b>ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C.</b> — A Roanoke Rapids man has been charged with sexually assaulting a 2-year-old, authorities said Monday.

Jeffery Carter, 21, was charged Friday with second-degree sexual offense and indecent liberties with a minor. He was being held in the Halifax County Detention Center under a $10,000 bond.

No other information about the case was released.

Tennis great and ESPN analyst Chris Evert announced she has been re-diagnosed with cancer and will not be part of the network's coverage of the 2024 Australian Open. Evert, who won 18 grand slam singles titles and three grand slam doubles titles during her career, had previously announced she had been diagnosed with stage 1 ovarian cancer in January 2022. The former world No. 1 revealed that she had completed her treatment following her sixth and final chemotherapy session in May 2022.
