A Roanoke Rapids man has been accused of beating and kidnapping a woman during a domestic dispute Friday, according to the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.

ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — A Roanoke Rapids man has been accused of beating and kidnapping a woman during a domestic dispute Friday, according to the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.

Lt. George Evans said the victim told deputies that Raymond Mitchell Spence, 47, assaulted her and wouldn't let her leave a home on Stephens Street.

The woman had visible injuries consistent with an assault, Evans said. She was treated and released from Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Spence was charged with second-degree kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, assault inflicting serious injury and assault on a female.

He was placed in the Halifax County jail without bond and scheduled to appear in court on April 27.

Spence has twice been convicted of assault inflicting serious injury, in 2006 and 1996, according to state Department of Correction records. He served nine months in jail for the 1996 conviction and three months for the 2006 conviction.

His criminal record, which dates to 1980, also includes convictions for larceny and drug offenses, records state.
