ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — The Roanoke Rapids City Council on Wednesday night picked as its new city manager a Raleigh native with experience as a lawyer and town manager.

Paul Sabiston, 46, will take over Aug. 17 and earn an annual salary of $95,000, said Mayor Drewery Beale. He replaces Phyllis P. Lee, a long-term city employee who stepped down as city manager in June.

The city council voted unanimously to hire Sabiston, Beale said.

Sabiston holds a law degree from Wake Forest University and was previously town manager of Shalotte, in Brunswick County.
