CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — East Franklin Street in Chapel Hill was closed during the morning commute on Monday due to a crash that brought down an electrical pole.

Police were diverting traffic away from the area, which is near the intersection with Roosevelt Drive. Around 6:30 a.m., they were able to open one lane of traffic each direction.

The crash brought down the pole and electrical lines, causing not only road closures, but also power outages in the surrounding area.

Crews from Duke Energy are on the scene working to replace the damaged equipment. According to their outage map, close to 300 people are without power, and restoration is estimated for around 11 a.m.

Officials strongly encourage drivers to avoid the area during their morning commute.
