Road closures begin for repair work at Garner railroad crossings
Two railroad closings will affect the Wednesday morning commute in Garner.
Posted — UpdatedThe closings include Jones Sausage Road at the railroad tracks and New Rand Road between Garner Road and U.S. Highway 70.
This work is centered in a very busy area near Amazon's fulfillment center, multiple schools and the White Oak shopping center, so heavier traffic is expected.
Crews started the project Tuesday at the Auburn Knightdale Road crossing, located between Garner Road and U.S. 70. Around 5 a.m. Wednesday, work is expected to move west to the Jones Sausage Road and New Rand Road crossing.
The work is expected to continue Thursday morning at the crossings at St. Mary’s Road, Vandora Springs Road Yeargan Road.
A news release from the town states the closings are expected to last several days. Drivers will need to find alternate routes that do not include the crossings while the work is underway.
The amount of time needed to complete the work at each crossing varies, according to the contractor. Some crossings will reopen after one day whereas others will require two to three days of work.
The town is expected to provide updates as necessary. The contractor has also provided several maps of suggested detours for drivers:

- To navigate around the closure from the north, drivers are encouraged to travel east on East Garner Road before turning right on Guy Road to head south.
- To navigate around the closure from the south, drivers are encouraged to travel east on Business 70 before turning left on Guy Road to go north.
- To navigate around the closure from the north, drivers are encouraged to travel west on East Garner Road before making a left on Benson Road to go south.
- To navigate around the closure from the south, drivers are encouraged to travel west on Timber Drive East and make a right on Benson Road to go north.
- To navigate around the closure from the north, drivers are encouraged to travel west on West Garner Road before making a left on Benson Road to go south.
- To navigate around the closure from the south, drivers are encouraged to travel west on West Main Street before making a right on Benson Road to go north.
- To navigate around the closure from the north, drivers are encouraged to travel east on West Garner Road before making a right on Benson Road to go south.
- To navigate around the closure from the south, navigate to U.S. 50/Benson Road to travel north.
- To navigate around the closure from the north, drivers can continue to along West Garner Road or take East Tryon Road to Hammond Road.
- To navigate around the closure from the south, drivers on Yeargan Road will be diverted to Mechanical Boulevard to travel northwest.
