Rise in COVID-19 cases at NC nursing homes, rehab centers causing alarm
Concerns are growing at the number of COVID-19 cases in nursing homes, rehab centers and assisted living locations after another case was diagnosed in Fayetteville.
Posted — UpdatedA female resident at the Village Green Health and Rehabilitation skilled nursing facility in Fayetteville is hospitalized at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center after testing positive for coronavirus, officials said. No other residents or staff members in the facility have any symptoms of COVID-19, they said.
There are at least six nursing homes across the Triangle with confirmed cases of COVID-19, including two in Wake County. Woodland Terrace and Sunrise of Raleigh have infected residents.
In Wayne County, Mount Olive Center has a case while PruittHealth in Durham has two cases. The highest amount of positive cases remains in Northampton County, where 26 from Pine Forest Rest Home are confirmed for the virus.
Senior living facilities are on high alert, with the elderly in the high-risk group. Dr. Mandy Cohen with the state Department of Health and Human Services spoke to how dire the need is to take care of the elderly and protect them from the spread of COVID-19.
"A new study just published a few days ago shows that containing an outbreak in a long term care facility can be exceptionally challenging, therefore it’s very important to prevent the introduction of the virus in the first place in those settings," Cohen said. "We are working very closely with our partners. We need to be incredibly vigilant in these long-term care settings.”
Officials at the Fayetteville facility said nobody else is showing signs of COVID-19. They said they are also following the CDC's guidelines with increased safety precautions moving forward.
