APEX, N.C. — An Apex homeowner had to do a double take Sunday night after he witnessed two coyotes trotting across his front yard.

Homeowner Scott Lloyd said he spotted the creatures through his Ring camera's security system after receiving the notification on the phone.

"I was actively working on something, so I picked up my phone and I was like, 'Oh, those are coyotes.' I put my phone down and kinda went back to work and then I was like, 'Oh those are coyotes!' It was kinda a delayed reaction for me," said Lloyd.

According to Lloyd, that was his first-time seeing coyotes in his neighborhood.

"It was normally deer or a cat, so I was really surprised," said Lloyd.

Dr. Tara Harrison, an associate professor of zoo and exotic medicine NC State, told WRAL News sightings are becoming more common with much new construction in and around the Triangle.

"You're probably going to be seeing coyotes going into areas where they may not have normally gone before, plus all the leaves are down still so it's a lot easier to see them,” Harrison said. "They were probably always there, you just didn't see them."

Harrison said coyotes are breeding this time of year, which means they are on the move looking for a partner.

"Don't feed your cat outside and don't feed your dog outside and also make sure that your trash is contained to try to make it so that your place is not a place for them to congregate," said Harrison.

After his close call with these two coyotes, Lloyd says he'll watch his dogs extra closely anytime he lets them out.

"A friend of mine out in California, their dog was actually attacked by a pack of coyotes, so that was the first thing that went through my head because we have two dogs," said Lloyd.
