RALEIGH, N.C. — The Historic Rialto Theatre will start screening first run art and independent films in June, the venue announced Wednesday.

"When we were allowed to reopen last year by the NC Governor, the Rialto found itself in a situation where it could open, but we had nothing to show," owners said via a press release. "Film distributors 'slipped' movie release dates until later into the year or the following year; released lesser movies to streaming; or pulled the better movies completely."

Now, U.S. film distributors are starting to release new movies, while the international market remains in a "holding pattern," the theatre said.

The theatre, located at 1620 Glenwood Ave. in Raleigh, will resume first run films on June 18. Until then, guests can book private screenings of personally owned blu-rays and other special events.
