GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Rev. William Barber II announced Monday he will retire from Greenleaf Christian Church in Goldsboro, where he's been pastor for the past 30 years, for a leadership position at Yale University.

Barber is accepting a new position at the Yale Divinity School, where he will lead the university's new Center for Public Theology.

In a tweet, Barber shared that the center will develop a partnership with Historically Black Colleges and Universities in the U.S. South to "build pathways for students to engage in our work."

The center will also involve theologians, bible scholars and sociologists in conversations around critical issues, including racism, poverty, ecological destruction, the denial of health care, war, economy and religious nationalism.

Barber is the former president of the NAACP. He will continue serving as co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign while in his new position.

Barber will be considered founding director of the theology center at Yale, which will officially launch in 2023.

Barber delivered the sermon at an interfaith worship service to celebrate the inauguration of President Joe Biden in 2021. He is known for working with the poor and for advocating for voter rights.

In 2019, Barber was convicted of second-degree trespassing at the state Legislative Building during a May 30, 2017, protest calling for Medicaid expansion and laying out the need to provide health coverage to thousands of working poor in North Carolina.

Barber led a group of protestors in a call-and-response that included Bible verses, sections of the state constitution and health care statistics. General Assembly Police said the protest prompted calls from legislative staffers who said the noise from the protest was making it hard to work.
