OXFORD, N.C. — A 79-year-old veteran of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol was struck and killed by a car Monday evening.

According to Sgt. Christopher D. Knox, Thomas “T.C” Cook, 79, of Oxford, was struck around 6:30 p.m. while crossing Chewning Road from his home to his mailbox.

Cook, who retired from the State Highway Patrol in 1990, was transported to the Granville Medical Center, where he died of his injuries.

Officials said the driver stopped and notified officers of the crash.

Alcohol was not a factor, officials said, and it is unclear if charges will be filed.
