FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The historic Prince Charles Hotel is about to breathe new life into downtown Fayetteville as developers plan to have the hotel restored by the end of the year.

Jordan Jones is passionate about the Prince Charles Hotel. Not only is he one of the principle developers in its restoration, his great-great grandfather helped build it in the 1920s. His family is proud of the work being done to restore the building.

“They’re pumped,” he said. “They want to make sure I don’t screw it up.”

Jones and his partners purchased the hotel in 2015. They’re investing $17 million to turn it into an apartment complex with 62 units and three restaurants.

“We’ll have apartments on both sides of the corridor,” he said. “Each floor here at the Prince Charles will have about nine or 10 apartments, depending on the configuration.”

One of the biggest stumbling blocks in the restoration was the old wooden windows. The city said they had to be repaired or replaced with the same type of windows, at a cost of $1,700 each, to keep the hotel’s historic appeal.

The Prince Charles is known as the hotel where Babe Ruth stayed when he hit his first home run. A mural depicting fans at a baseball stadium was uncovered when contractors peeled off the old drywall. Jones plans to restore the mural as a tribute to the new baseball stadium being built next door.

“We want to do more than the Prince Charles, so today we actually have about $10 million in investment that will be happening on this nine-acre site,” he said.

Jones believes he will have all 62 apartments rented before the hotel opens in February.
