26 residents displaced after Raleigh apartment fire

18 apartment units were destroyed and 26 people are now without a home, according to the American Red Cross.

The fire happened on Melvid Court, near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Authorities did not say what caused the fire.

María Cordova Castillo, who lives in the apartment complex, said she helped her neighbors get out of the apartment complex.

"The only thing that mattered was life. The material things don’t matter," she said. "Thank God the fire got [under] control."

Castillo said she was afraid the fire was going to spread and she made sure to wake up all her neighbors so they could evacuate safely.

"We ran to knock on doors, wake everyone [and tell them] to be safe and be careful with what was happening," she said.

The Red Cross is providing financial assistance and shelter to the displaced residents.

It's unclear at this time if anyone was injured in the fire.

This was the second apartment fire reported on Friday night. A fire destroyed an apartment in Wake Forest on Gateway Commons Circle.

Firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading to nearby units, and no one was hurt.
