RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh police said a pedestrian and his dog died in a crash Tuesday night in Raleigh.

Police responded to Dresser Court, near Wake Forest Road and Bland Road, before 8 p.m. Officials said Donald Lee Lawver, of Snow Avenue in Raleigh, was walking his dog when he tried to cross the street where there wasn't a designated crosswalk.

According to the wreck report, Lawver "darted" across the street. A car swerved to avoid hitting Lawver and missed him before a second car hit both Lawver and his dog.

Officials said Lawver died just before 10 p.m. Tuesday after being taken to WakeMed. The dog was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police closed westbound Wake Forest Road from St. Albans Drive to New Hope Church Road during the investigation and clean-up. Charges were pending, police said.
