Report of Weapon Sends School Into Lockdown

A Chapel Hill elementary school was locked down for about two hours Tuesday after police received a report of an armed person in the area, officials said.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Frank Porter Graham Elementary School was locked down for about two hours Tuesday after police received a report of an armed person in the area, officials said.

Police notified school officials at about 11:45 a.m. that an armed person seen walking west on N.C. Highway 54, Principal Shelia Burnette said. Police said officers later picked up two youths with a BB gun.

The school moved to "mild lock down" mode at about 1:45 p.m., allowing more movement within the school while still restricting children from walking or playing outside, Burnette said.

Parents would be notified of the incident by an automated phone message Tuesday afternoon, she said.

Police officers were expected to assist with school release Tuesday afternoon and monitor the area until all children have left, she said.
