HICKORY, N.C.A report by U.S. News found that the town of Hickory was one the most affordable places to live in the entire nation.
Housing costs have stayed well below average in Hickory, according to the report.

According to Zillow, the average price of a home in Hickory is $257,276, which is below North Carolina's average of $309,087.

The area is mostly known as a place for retirees and families to live, but is growing as a place for young professionals, the report said.

Hickory is about an hour from the hustle and bustle of Charlotte and an hour from the mountains of Asheville.

"With growth on the horizon, new businesses, including restaurants, retail stores and bars are popping up," according to the report.

Hickory got its name from a popular tavern made of logs beneath hickory trees. Since then, its been a spot for community gathering and, of course, beer.

Hickory has plenty of local breweries like the Olde Hickory Station restaurant and market, right near where the original tavern once stood. The bar has 50 beers and ciders on tap, with a handful brewed right down the street at the Olde Hickory Brewery.

According to data from U.S. News and World Report, median monthly rent in Hickory is around $708 a month — well-below the national median of $1,164.
