When your vehicle needs a fix, which the most cost-effective and quality option:

  • Taking it to the dealership?
  • Taking it to a locally-owned repair shop?
  • Fixing it yourself?

For those of us who aren't able to make fixes ourselves, a local repair shop or dealer is a must – and once we find one we trust, we usually stick with them loyally.

However, Consumer Reports says it's a good idea to strategize each job. It could save you money in the long run.

When to take your car to the dealership for repairs

First of all, if your vehicle is still under warranty, always take it to the dealer for a covered repair.

You should also take your car to the dealer for recall work or any issue found with the safety systems, including airbag and seatbelt repair, according to Ryan Pszczolkowski with Consumer Reports.

"This is because of the ever-increasing complexity of hardware and software," he says.

Dealers usually have the most up-to-date tools and training, according to Pszczolkowski.

He also recommends taking your car to the dealership for oil changes. While it might be more expensive than a chain, experts say it can be worth it for the higher quality oil and a filter specific to your vehicle.

When to take your vehicle to a locally-owned shop or mechanic for repairs

For repairs such as brakes, suspension, spark plugs, even an alternator, Consumer Reports says you can save some money using an independent mechanic.

The shops usually have a lower labor rate and can sometimes keep costs down by using after-market parts.

When to repair a vehicle problem yourself

Some repairs are easier than others.

If you enjoy making small repairs to your vehicle, you can save money.

“Some repairs are really easy to do — changing out air filters, wiper blades, even headlights! The parts are inexpensive and readily available,” said Pszczolkowski.
