Temperatures won't be nearly as cool Tuesday as they were on Monday, and the afternoon should be pleasant with a high of 70 degrees and abundant sunshine.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Clouds and cooler weather are in the way for the end of the work week, but the weekend should be dry, WRAL meteorologist Mike Maze said.

Tropical Storm Willa, which made landfall as a hurricane in northwest Mexico Wednesday morning with 120 mph (195 kph) winds, will continue to march across the southern U.S. and eventually swing north along the Atlantic coast.

That track brings cooler air and rain to the Triangle for Friday. "We're likely to see a soaking rain Friday night," Maze said.

After Wednesday's sunny skies and high temperatures near 60 degrees, Thursday will see thicker, upper level clouds build throughout the day.

"We will have dim sunshine at the start of the day, but it will gradually become grayer and grayer into the afternoon as the clouds lower and thicken," Maze said.

The rain stays away through Thursday, then chances increase for Friday.

"There are indications of low pressure sweeping into the area from the southwest bringing widespread showers to the forecast to close out the work week. It will be an unseasonably cool and wet day," Maze said.

Dozens of area high schools have adjusted their football schedules, moving Friday games to Thursday evening, in an attempt to get ahead of the rain.

The clouds will clear a bit for the weekend, and temperatures will warm back up to 60 on Saturday and into the mid-60s on Sunday.
