The scramble for a city of Raleigh summer camp began this morning with hundreds of parents logging into the city's parks system before dawn to sign their kids up for programs.

At 6:30 a.m., Monday morning, the city opened registration up for six locations - Brier Creek, Durant, Eastgate, Greystone, Lake Lynn and Optimist. By mid-morning, Summer X-Press camps at both Lake Lynn and Optimist Park were filled, but there were slots available for Teen X-Press camps at Eastgate and various specialty camps at Brier Creek, Durant and Greystone.

Summer camp registration for the city will continue through Friday. Each day this week, the city will continue to open registration for new locations. On Tuesday, for example, parents can begin to register their kids for camps at Abbotts Creek, Millbrook Exchange, Barwell, Green Road, Hill Street, Lions Park, Marsh Creek and Worthdale.

Registration begins at 6:30 a.m., daily, through March 8. The city's website has the full schedule of which locations parents can register their kids for on each day and more information.

If you plan on registering for a city camp, the city offers this advice:

  • Be sure you know the location of your camp.
  • On your camp registration day(s), log in to Reclink by visiting parks.raleighnc.gov and select Register on Reclink.
  • You MUST log in to RecLink before beginning the Summer Camp registration process.
  • After you have successfully logged in, browsed and selected camps to add to your cart, select Go to Checkout to proceed with the registration process. You will receive your receipt and any additional required forms by email.

And more tips (from the city) ...

  • With many people excited to register campers, you may experience slower than usual processing times.
  • If you add an item to your cart, leave it in the cart and allow the transaction to be completed.
  • Do not close your browser or log out until registration is complete.
  • Once registration is complete, please log out of the system.
During this camp registration process, which can be incredibly unnerving for parents, many of the city's most affordable camps fill up first. If you weren't able to sign up for a less expensive summer camps and wonder how you'll be able to afford to send your kids to camp, the city does offer financial assistance—both fee reductions and payment plans. The city's Play It Forward page has more information about how to apply for help (and also how to support the program for those in need).
