RECALL: Vornado space heaters following report of death & fire hazard

Select Vornado electric space heaters have been recalled due to fire and burn hazards and a reported death resulting from using the heater.

The electric space heater can overheat while in use causing fire and burn hazards. There have been 19 documented cases of the heaters catching fire and one man has reportedly died in a fire involving the Vornado heater.

The recalled heaters were sold at Target, Amazon, Bed Bath & Beyond, Home Depot and other locations. There are approximately 350,000 units included in this recall.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the specific recalled product "involves Vornado VH101 Personal Vortex electric space heaters sold in the following colors: black, coral orange, grayed jade, cinnamon, fig, ice white and red. The heaters measure about 7.2 inches long by 7.8 inches wide by 7.10 inches high and have two heat settings (low and high) and a fan only/no heat setting. “Vornado” with a “V” behind it is printed on the front of the unit. The model/type “VH101,” serial number and ETL mark are printed on a silver rating label on the bottom of the unit."

If you have one of these heaters, stop using it immediately and contact Vornado regarding a full refund or a free replacement unit.

According to the recall notice, "In December 2017, a 90-year-old man in Chanhassen, Minnesota died as a result of a fire involving the recalled heater. Vornado has received a total of 19 reports of the heaters catching on fire. These products were sold at Bed Bath & Beyond, Home Depot, Menards, Orchard Supply, Target and other stores nationwide and online at Amazon.com, Target.com, Vornado.com and other websites from August 2009 through March 2018 for about $30."

The recall was originally announced on April 4, 2018 and has been re-announced on August 22, 2018.
