MORRISVILLE, N.C. — Many travelers were already passing through at Raleigh-Durham International Airport before sunrise on Friday morning as the holiday weekend beckoned.

Some of the TSA checkpoint lines were already long around 4:30 a.m. RDU officials expect almost 40,000 people will pass through on Friday alone.

The travel rebound has been impressive. RDU set pandemic records for the number of passengers in March, April and in May.

And the majority of people flying now are taking vacations.

So far, we haven’t seen many cancellations outside of one flight departing for New York, but we’ll keep an eye on that. A few delays were reported on the departures board.

We'll keep an eye on the lines so you know what to expect if you're heading to the airport.

On the roads, experts predict a record 43.6 million people will hit the road for the holiday weekend.

The national average for gas was at $3.09 earlier in the week, according to AAA. That’s the highest average price of the year and experts say it will keep going up through next week. Currently, drivers are paying nearly a dollar more per gallon of gas than they were at this time last year.
