MORRISVILLE, N.C. — It's Mother's Day weekend, and thousands will graduate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, from Duke University, and from other area colleges and universities this weekend.

That combination feeds into an expected spike in traffic into and out of Raleigh-Durham International Airport beginning Friday.

RDU predicts that Friday will be the busiest day of the long weekend, with another spike on Monday as those who visit the Triangle head back home. The airport expects more than 177,000 passengers to fly through the airport this weekend, an increase of 22.7% over the same weekend last year.

According to a press release: "Passenger traffic is expected to be heaviest on Friday, followed by Sunday. Although the summer months are the busiest season of the year at RDU, the combined traffic from Mother's Day and graduations typically make it one of the single busiest weekends at the airport."

To prepare, passengers should arrive at the airport two hours early for their scheduled flights.

To limit traffic congestion, the airport recommends that those picking up passengers wait in the cell phone lot, located at 1000 Trade Dr. on the RDU campus.
