Viewer votes on Wednesday helped Rayshun Lamarr become the second North Carolina native to advance to the top 12 on “The Voice.”

The Chapel Hill native, who is on Team Adam, sang “I’m Going Down” by Mary J. Blige and viewers voted online in real time to help him advance to the next round.

His road to the national stage includes fighting cancer and a rare disease that temporarily took his hearing, vision and voice.

On Monday, Lamarr’s rendition to Stevie Wonder’s “Overjoyed” was not enough to save him from elimination, but Sanford native Britton Buchanan advanced with his version of “Some Kind of Wonderful” by Grand Funk Railroad.

Buchanan, who is on Team Alicia, has always been drawn to classic rock, admiring artists like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Jackson Browne, according to family members

While viewers voted on Twitter and through the official Voice app this week, voting will now proceed as usual by using a dedicated Twitter hashtag announced during the show, casting a vote at NBC.com/VoiceVote; voting via iTunes by purchasing eligible songs from the contestant; vote by streaming eligible songs on Apple Music.
