— East Carolina University police opened an investigation after a female student reported that she was raped in a bathroom of a classroom Wednesday afternoon.

According to text alerts from campus police, a man armed with a knife assaulted the woman in the women's bathroom on the first floor of the Austin Building shortly before 2 p.m. The man, who was wearing blue jeans, fled in an unknown direction.

It was unclear if the man was waiting in the bathroom or followed the victim inside the building.

Local CBS affiliate WNCT reports that the woman suffered small cuts on her arm and was treated at Pitt Memorial Hospital.

A police report, obtained by WNCT, says that police were investigating a first-degree rape, assault with a deadly weapon and kidnapping.
