RALEIGH, N.C. — A 2-year-old boy was seriously injured following a fall from the fourth-floor window of a Raleigh apartment on Wednesday night.

Raleigh police said the incident happened at an apartment complex in the 1300 block of Crab Orchard Drive just after 7 p.m..

The child was taken to WakeMed with life-threatening injuries.

Police said a parent was home at the time of the incident.

A neighbor said he was inside his apartment when he heard a loud thump followed by screaming. He ran outside and saw the unconscious toddler laying on the ground next to a screen that appeared to be from the window. He said other neighbors called 911 for help.

"The child was unconscious and he couldn't breathe. One of the neighbors, he gave CPR and he started breathing again, and I just wanted to see how else I could help these people," he said. "I'm pretty sure they've grieving right now and hopefully everybody's OK."

Raleigh police said they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the child's fall, but no charges were pending Thursday morning.
