RALEIGH, N.C. — The Raleigh City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved the idea of putting bicycle lanes on Hillsborough Street.

The city will now ask the North Carolina Department of Transportation to consider installing bicycle lanes there.

The lanes would be installed on Hillsborough Street from Enterprise to Gardner streets. The estimated cost to add the lanes is $40,000, officials said.

The council stipulated that the lanes be paid for with any funds remaining in the budget for the $9.92 million Hillsborough Street improvement project after the work is complete.

The first phase of the Hillsborough Street project, which involves placing roundabouts on Hillsborough Street between Oberlin Road and Gardner Street, is expected to be completed in September.
