Raleigh sets dates for summer teen jobs program

Summer might seem like a long time from now, but, if you have kids, it's never too early to plan. And if you have teens interested in earning some cash this summer, you might want to mark some dates on your calendars.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Summer might seem like a long time from now, but, if you have kids, it's never too early to plan. And if you have teens interested in earning some cash this summer, you might want to mark some dates on your calendars. Raleigh's youth job program is gearing up for another season.

Here's what you need to know:

Who Can Apply?

Teens must be at least 15 years old and no older than 18 as of May 31, 2020. They also must live within the limits of the City of Raleigh. To prove age and residency, applicants must submit a clear photocopy of a North Carolina driver’s license, learner’s permit or North Carolina state identification card.

What Do Participants Do?

Those selected work 20 to 30 hours a week as office staff, light laborers and recreation support staff. The program runs from June through August. Teens earn $8.25 per hour. On top of the work experience, participants also learn life skills training and receive mentoring from local lawyers, law enforcement officers, and other professionals, according to the city's website. They also attend workshops on employment readiness, work ethic development, communication, budgeting, decision-making, and conflict resolution.

How Do Teens Apply?

The process includes an application and in-person interview at community centers across the city. The critical dates are as follows:

  • Feb. 15: Application available online
  • March 3 - March 27: Interviews
  • Hiring Notification Emails: Mid-April
  • Mandatory Orientation: May 16
  • Work Dates: June 15 through August 14

Where Do Interviews Take Place?

Interviews take place at the following locations from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Be sure you come prepared with all of your required documentation.

  • Tuesday, March 3 - Abbotts Creek Community Center
  • Thursday, March 5 - Halifax Community Center
  • Monday, March 9 - Worthdale Community Center
  • Wednesday, March 11 - Marsh Creek Community Center
  • Friday, March 13 - Pullen Community Center
  • Monday, March 16 - Kiwanis Park Neighborhood Center
  • Wednesday, March 18 - Laurel Hills Community Center
  • Friday, March 20 - John Chavis Memorial Park Community Center
  • Tuesday, March 24 - Jaycee Park Community Center
  • Friday, March 27 - Millbrook Exchange Park Community Center
