RALEIGH, N.C. — More than 50,000 cars a day pass by the North Hills shopping area on Six Forks Road, where the construction group Kane Realty wants to build towers up to 40 stories tall.

That growth is why city council is taking a new look at the future of Six Forks Road.

The city is already working on a project to widen the road north of the shopping area. Rising costs have delayed the start of that construction to spring of 2024.

In total, the cost of all the projects will cost up to $85 million. That includes widening the road, adding a median between the two directions of traffic and putting in a path where people can walk or bike.

City council is going down the path of taking up the road improvements and the North Hills rezoning side-by-side.

"Where we look at these roadway improvements and figure out what exactly we can handle and how we’re going to fund it, and separate from that we deal with the rezoning case," said Raleigh City Councilor Patrick Buffkin.

Kane Realty's rezoning proposal hasn't changed at this point. Their proposal also includes building affordable housing.

The rezoning and the Six Forks Road improvements will both go to city council's transportation committee to work on the details.
