RALEIGH, N.C. — After a six-year stint downtown, Raleigh's fireworks are moving back to the North Carolina State Fairgrounds.

Organizers said due to the ever-changing skyline in downtown Raleigh, the main event needed to be moved.

"We had more and more building popping up downtown, so that the sight line got narrower and narrower," said Taylor Traversari, with the City of Raleigh. "On Fayetteville Street, we've got some new buildings, we've got some construction going on, so it just made sense to bring it back out to where it used to live."

Traversari said unlike the downtown festival, because of ample space, visitors are encouraged to make the experience their own out at the fairgrounds.

"What we recommend is to bring your own picnic and kind of act like it's a tailgating at a normal Carter Finley or PNC Arena event," he said. "Bring in your own picnic because we're not going to have vendors and food available for sale."

So there's a tradeoff, but ultimately the city says it's about the view.

"It's going to be boombastic," Traversari said.

Gates open at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, and fireworks will begin at about 9:30 p.m.
