RALEIGH, N.C. — On Friday morning, the April jobs report will provide insight into how inflation is affecting the job market and worker wages nationwide.

Local businesses are still dealing with a shortage of workers, although the manager of Mellow Mushroom off Glenwood Avenue said his restaurant is in much better shape than when WRAL News last visited earlier in the pandemic.

According to the North Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Association, overall employment numbers are still down by 18% across the state.

Last year, the restaurant was struggling to find staff, but manager Steve Gardner said he has started offering bonuses and other financial incentives to bring in new employees.

"Staffing has gotten better for us -- tremendously better," Gardner said. "But I mean, our kitchen help is still lacking a little bit. But our servers for the house staff, as we call it ... we’re pretty well staffed. We're still always hiring great people but, knock on wood, it's definitely turned a corner."

The Restaurant and Lodging Association also pointed out new restaurants and hotels have opened recently, creating more jobs that need to be filled.
