RALEIGH, N.C. — The Raleigh Rescue Mission hosted a Back to School Backpack Giveaway Saturday at their donation center on Capital Boulevard.

From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., volunteers at the Raleigh Rescue Mission gave away 600 backpacks stuffed with school supplies.

"Over 900 backpacks were donated from individuals and groups," said staff member Lauri Papa. "The other 300 backpacks will either go to various outreach efforts or stay right here at the Raleigh Rescue Mission for kids who are housed here."

The event also featured an hourly gift card raffle, a $5 bag sale for children's clothing and shoes, a visit from Muddy the Mudcat and donuts and $1 hot dogs for shoppers.

People interested in donating school supplies, backpacks and other items to the Raleigh Rescue Mission can visit the store and donation center at 4700 Capital Blvd.
