RALEIGH, N.C. — Robert Siems, owner of a coin shop in Raleigh, says he could have died during an armed robbery Tuesday night.

Siems, 71, said he was putting away things at Golden Isles, at 200 W. Peace St., when two robbers rushed in.

The robbers wrestled him to the ground, he said, and he might have fired the first shot to protect himself.

He missed, and one of the attackers shot him in the arm.

Adam Evans works at the cleaners next door, where he heard the commotion and the gunfire.

He walked into the store as the robbers were grabbing for the register.

“I saw him on the ground,” Evans said. “He was distraught.”

Evans called 911.

Siems said the robbers got away with more than $1,000.

Had they arrived a few moments earlier, Siems says he would have been in a protected part of the store near the back.

He stepped out to wrap up business for the day.

Siems was taken to WakeMed after the robbery and was recovering at his girlfriend's home Wednesday.

Police are still searching for Siems' attackers.

Anyone with information can call Raleigh Crime Stoppers at 919-834-4357.
