RALEIGH, N.C. — A 30-year-old man was killed Saturday evening during an officer-involved shooting in east Raleigh, authorities said.

The incident occurred shortly after 8:30 p.m. in the 1000 block of N. Rogers Lane, near New Bern Avenue.

The strip shopping center at the address includes a Food Lion grocery store, Dairy Queen fast-food restaurant, barber shop and Sheetz gas station. It is located between Raleigh and Knightdale.

Police did not immediately say what led to the shooting, but on Sunday said the officer involved is W.B. Edwards. The man who died was identified as Soheil Antonio Mojarrad, of Raleigh.

According to arrest records, Mojarrad, 30, faced other charges dating back 10 years, including second-degree trespassing (in 2009), drug possession (2010 and 2012), misdemeanor larceny (2011) and assault (2017 and 2019).

Apart from the latest incident, Mojarrad's most recent arrest was in January, when he was charged with simple assault.

Much of the parking lot was surrounded by yellow crime scene tape as several officers arrived at the location to investigate the incident. At one point, officers closed off access to the parking lot to customers while they searched for clues.

Ibrahim Shteyh was closing up his electronics shop when he saw dozens of police cars. "It felt like every police car in Raleigh was here last night," he said. "As soon as I turned around, I saw the magnitude of what was going on. Just cars pouring in from everywhere."

The State Bureau of Investigation is expected to review the incident, which is standard protocol when a law enforcement officer discharges their weapon and wounds someone.

Police said the officer was wearing a body camera, but it was not activated at the time of the shooting. However, the Raleigh Police Department and the SBI are diligently reviewing other video related to the incident, according to a news release.

Shteyh said Raleigh police officers were interviewing people inside the nearby businesses, trying to get more information about what happened.

Staff at Overtime Sports Pub said they handed over their outdoor surveillance footage to police Saturday night.

WRAL has requested any video surveillance or written reports on the shooting.
