RALEIGH, N.C. — A Raleigh nonprofit is making a difference by making art.

Design For Joy is a unique, Christian-based nonprofit where women who are struggling with everything from domestic violence to substance abuse can get a second chance by using their creative talents.

Facial Archer is one of those "makers." About one year ago, Archer said she hit rock bottom after her husband died.

"I was left alone. I couldn't pay the bills. I didn't know what to do ... desperate for help," she said. "I didn't know what was happening. I was almost at the point of suicide."

Archer was recently left Healing Transitions, a program for homeless women dealing with substance abuse.

"At the point where I had to go out and find employment, I had some insecurities because I hadn't done it for so long," she said.

Healing Transitions connected Archer with Designed For Joy, where she is paid $12 an hour to make women's accessories. She is learning a skill and developing a work history.

"I feel like a totally different person. I put on my makeup, put on my jewelry. I got a job today," Archer said.

Founder Cary Heise and her partner Amy Hill modeled the co-op after projects they has created around the world during mission trips.

"It feels like the vision we had for this place is coming to fruition," Heise said. "When women walk in the door, they are feeling like this is a safe place. We can build their confidence, we can remind them of their special skills and talents and purposes in life."

"Because of Designers for Joy, I'm not scared anymore," Archer said.
