Raleigh neighborhood throws their UPS delivery man a retirement party

Jennifer Etkin, resident of one of the neighborhoods on Johnny's route, said he was a part of the fabric of the neighborhood. He knows her children's names, what they're studying and what sports they play.

"He helps us stay in the know if the neighbors need help," she said. "He is such a gem."

Johnny would deliver packages with a big smile, a wave and a friendly "toot-toot" of his horn, community members said.

He's built relationships with many families on his route and will be missed by everyone he served when he retires next month.

To show thanks, the Inman Park community decided to throw him a party.

"For two decades, Johnny has delivered excellent customer service to us," said Matthew Eisley, president of Inman Park's Home Owner's Association board.

Neighbors gathered outside with a sign that read, "Happy Retirement, the legend has retired."

"We wanted to send him off, like the friend he is, with great gratitude and fond well-wishes for his next adventure," said Eisley.

They surprised Johnny with thank you letters, a donation, and baked goods on Wednesday night.

When he saw the sign, and the crowd gathered to tell him goodbye, he was touched.

"Really? What? Man you're joking," he said with a smile on his face.
