SURF CITY, N.C. — A Raleigh man died Thursday when two personal watercraft collided on the Intracoastal Waterway near the N.C. Highway 50 bridge to Surf City, authorities said.

Thomas Petrie, 52, was piloting one watercraft when it was hit on the left side by another personal watercraft that was piloted by a 51-year-old relative, said Doug Jones, an officer with the state Wildlife Resources Commission. The watercraft were traveling at 10 to 20 mph at the time of the collision, he said.

Petrie was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, in Wilmington, where he died of his injuries, Jones said.

Both men were wearing life jackets, Jones said. No other injuries were reported.

The incident remains under investigation.
