SANFORD, N.C. — A Raleigh man was killed in a head-on collision early Monday morning during a police chase in Sanford.

Police said that Scott Reid, 56, drove his vehicle through the front of a convenience store on Lee Avenue while trying to steal from the store.

The store manager at the Fastee Mart said Reid did around $10,000 in damage and stole candy and cigarettes.

After the thefts, he got back into his vehicle and drove away. Sanford police then chased after Reid, who refused to stop.

Officers chased Reid down Tramway Road toward U.S. Highway 1 until he crashed head-on with another car near Wicker Street.

Two other people involved in the crash were transported to local hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. Reid died at the scene of the crash, officials said.

A review of the Sanford police department's pursuit policy notes that "pursuits of persons suspected of non-dangerous felonies or misdemeanor crimes are discouraged" and "dangerous felonies include, but are not limited to: murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, rape, arson, or burning of an occupied structure, and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury."

Sanford police did not expand on if they believed the suspect was committing a dangerous felony.

An investigation is ongoing.
